FAQ
Is this a subnet calculator or an IP plan generator?
This is a greenfield IP plan generator for new sites / new customers / new labs. It produces a clean, repeatable VLAN + subnet plan you can deploy consistently.
- Yes: VLAN planning, sizing, consistent patterns, export.
- No (v1): fixing existing networks, importing random 192.168.x.x, multi-site projects, auto-detecting used subnets.
IP addressing scheme for multiple sites: why “one site = one /16” (10.<site-id>.0.0/16)?
It guarantees no overlap between locations, keeps routing simple, and scales without redesign. VLAN subnets live inside the site’s /16, so your IP plan stays predictable and readable.
Guest VLAN isolation
Guest is still created (and included in CLI/export). It’s flagged as isolated so you can keep it out of IPsec routing. Real isolation is enforced on your firewall (zones/policies).
Subnet sizing rules (/24 vs /23 vs split)
- Up to ~254 devices → /24
- Up to ~510 devices → /23
- Above that → split into multiple /23 segments by default
- You can optionally override to a larger subnet (/22+) with warnings
Best practice: smaller broadcast domains are usually healthier. Large L2 segments can increase broadcast/multicast noise.
IPsec-friendly routing and handover
Because every site gets a dedicated /16, your IPsec selectors and routes stay consistent. You can route “site-to-site” cleanly without overlapping private ranges.
Vendor CLI templates / configuration generator (Technical Preview)
CLI generation is a preview feature. It outputs copy/paste templates (no secrets). Always review before applying on production devices.
- FortiGate: VLAN interfaces + optional zones/DHCP/policies
- HP Aruba 2530: VLANs + tagged/untagged ports (switch-side)
Roadmap / Pro ideas
- Beta: more vendor templates, better DHCP ranges per segment, printable diagrams
- Pro: multi-site projects, saved designs, share links, more deployment presets
